Diatomaceous Earth

What is diatomaceous earth?

Diatoms are single-celled algae that build shells of amorphous silica — structures of extraordinary geometric precision, drawn from silica dissolved in the water around them. When diatoms die, those shells settle and accumulate. Over geological time, the deposits consolidate into diatomite.

Mined, dried and milled, that material becomes diatomaceous earth: a mineral whose entire industrial value comes from a pore architecture built by an organism, not by a process engineer.

It is also known as kieselguhr, particularly in the brewing industry, and as diatomite in its raw mined form.

Material characteristics

Key functional properties

Porosity

An open, interconnected pore structure giving high void volume at low weight.

Surface area

Substantially greater surface area per unit mass than comparable minerals, driving adsorption performance.

Permeability

The ability of a filter cake to pass liquid, adjustable through grade selection across a wide range.

Adsorption

Capacity to take up and hold liquids while remaining free-flowing, enabling carrier and absorbent applications.

Particle morphology

Irregular, structured particles that build permeable cakes rather than compacting.

Chemical inertness

Stable across most process conditions, with limited reactivity in typical applications.

Low bulk density

More functional volume per kilogram than denser mineral alternatives.

Property behaviour is grade-dependent. Where a property is critical to your duty, we evaluate it against your process conditions rather than quoting a general figure.

Available grades

Grade selection is the central trade-off in most applications. Finer grades generally deliver greater clarity or adsorption at the cost of flow rate; coarser grades reverse the trade.

Handling, storage and safety

We would rather raise this than have you find it in the SDS.

Diatomaceous earth is a siliceous material, and like other mineral powders it requires appropriate handling. Silica exists in both amorphous and crystalline forms; crystalline silica is a recognised occupational respiratory hazard, and crystalline content varies significantly between natural and thermally processed grades.

What this means practically

Dust control, ventilation and appropriate respiratory protection during handling and transfer.

Storage in dry conditions with packaging kept sealed.

Full Safety Data Sheet supplied with every consignment and available on request.

Grade-specific composition documented in the technical data.
