Diatomaceous Earth

Nature's microscopic engineering

Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring siliceous material formed from the fossilised skeletons of diatoms — single-celled algae that build intricate silica shells. Those shells survive as a mineral with a pore architecture no manufacturing process has matched economically: highly porous, low in bulk density, and chemically inert across most process conditions.

That structure is why the same mineral can clarify beer, keep fertilizer free-flowing, carry a liquid additive as a dry powder, and pretreat used cooking oil.
